I've been working with silverpoint for about fifteen years now. I became smitten with it while living in London, when I stumbled into a silverpoint exhibition at The British Museum. Several of Leonardo's most famous drawings, which I'd been familiar with for decades, were in the show. Here was an Old Master medium, favored by da Vinci himself, which carried a patina of time when it oxidized... on multiple levels it fascinated me. I had to know it. Learn it. Few things will slow you down, or make your decisions more deliberate, than adopting a silverpoint practice. It's very difficult to erase (or used to be anyway); and also difficult to build up. You have to be patient and precise. Which was exactly what my drawing practice needed after spending years speed-drawing in pen as a night guard at The Met in NYC. Silverpoint has been good to me. It's my favorite medium and I plan to use it moving forward for a variety of projects.
